We’re Celebrating Our Prestigious Gold Green Tourism Award!

We’re delighted to share the exciting news that Blackfriars Restaurant has been awarded the Green Tourism Gold Award! This incredible recognition celebrates our unwavering commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices and places us as a shining example of environmental stewardship within the hospitality industry.

The Green Tourism Gold Award is the highest honour granted by Green Tourism, an internationally renowned certification programme that assesses businesses on their sustainability efforts. It recognises organisations like ours that go above and beyond to reduce their carbon footprint while delivering exceptional guest experiences.

Here at Blackfriars we’ve embraced sustainability in everything we do. From prioritising locally sourced, seasonal ingredients to avoiding air-freighted goods, we strive to make thoughtful choices that reduce our environmental impact. We’ve worked closely with our suppliers to foster sustainable delivery practices and even invested in a refrigerated electric van to transport fresh fish from North Shields Fish Market alongside fruit and vegetables, reducing carbon emissions in our supply chain.

We’re equally passionate about encouraging greener lifestyles among our team and guests. That’s why we’ve introduced initiatives like a Cycle to Work scheme, on-site bike storage, and shower facilities to support green travel options. Beyond that, we take pride in collaborating with local charities and organisations such as Changing Lives, NE1CAN, Kings Trust (previously The Prince’s Trust), Newcastle United Foundation and the Gateshead Older People’s Assembly to host sustainable and inclusive events that make a difference in our community.

Receiving this award is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. As Andy Hook, our owner, put it:

“We are thrilled to receive the Green Tourism Gold Award. This recognition reflects the hard work of our entire team and our dedication to running a restaurant that values sustainability as much as it does quality and hospitality. We’re committed to leading by example and inspiring others in the industry to make a positive environmental impact.”

“But our journey doesn’t stop here. We’re continuously looking at ways to set new standards in eco-conscious dining. Whether it’s reducing waste, enhancing biodiversity in our redeveloped cloister garden, or raising awareness about sustainable living, we’re committed to creating a positive impact for the planet, our team, and our guests.

“We’re so proud to share this achievement with you, our loyal guests, who inspire us to keep doing what we do. Thank you for your continued support as we strive to lead the way in sustainable dining.”
