Join us for an evening exploring the wine and history associated with one of medieval Europe’s most powerful institutions: the papacy. Dr Andrew Ferrara, Durham University, delves into how the popes and viticulture were intertwined throughout the Middle Ages, while we present contemporary wines from the associated regions, alongside some nibbles and canapés derived from 14th century recipes.
The evening will be split into three parts, beginning with the early Papacy, followed by a short tasting of wine alongside some nibbles and canapés based on contemporary regional recipes. The second will explore the papal states in the High Middle Ages with their extensive estates in central Italy. A second short tasting of wine and food from this region will follow. The third and final part will discuss the Avignon papacy, again complemented by wine and nibbles.
Dr Andrew Ferrara is Career Development Fellow in the Archaeology Department at Durham University. His research focuses on the use and development of medieval episcopal castles and palaces. Previously he was curator at the Auckland Project, Co. Durham, and Norwich Castle for its £27m refurbishment project.
